NOT PSYCHOLOGY
Perhaps coming out of an emotionally exhausting month was not the time to revisit Melanie Martinez’ most recent and long anticipated release of Portals. Or better yet, it absolutely had been. Martinez continues to paint phenomenal landscapes of alternate universes and mythos of creatures within the album art, yet the lyrical content seems so familiar.
NYMPHOLOGY, the eleventh track on Portals, comes straight for the toxicity that you’ve experienced with less than ideal men, something a majority of us have desperately needed to hear. (largely myself, here, folks.) Directly relating to the ideal womanhood that we are supposed to portray, relating to my years spent not entirely being myself.
“Be the manic pixie dream girl that you fucking ought to be” // “Damaged oddity, bought by Southeby’s - auctioned to a selfish man who thinks that he’s the prophecy” are quite frankly fighting words, and I greatly appreciate them. Even upon a listen a year after its release, Portals as a tertiary release, especially NYMPHOLOGY, have been recurrent plays.
If NYMPHOLOGY is not for you, Martinez is currently on tour and coming to a city near you. Learn her discography on Spotify, or find her on Instagram.
