INDEPENDENCE DAY FOR ALL…

But especially Miss Kesha Rose.

Few words can describe the thrill in my body when I saw Kesha’s announcement of her first single as a free woman. For those of you who do not know, Kesha has been in a years-long legal battle with her abuser and was finally freed of certain conditionals not too long ago. This article provides a timeline of such events for those who want to dig further.

I grew up with Kesha, watching her TV show, buying her records, wanting nothing more than the freedom of the application of a blue lip. Little do you know at the time.

It’s hard to focus strictly on the song and less on Kesha’s strengths as an activist, a human being, and as mother. Joyride serves as something so unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Classic party lyricism with the power behind it that she has worked tirelessly to reclaim. A nearly-house beat, it scratches every itch. Quite frankly, I can’t wait to see it on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

I am thrilled to announce Kesha’s back in her element, one that she deserves to stand in and reclaim. She says it best - “Don’t even try to give me shit, I’ve earned the right to be like this.”
