Hotel Mira Sings To The Masses at Piano’s

Hotel Mira - New Colossus Festival

3.09-3.10 ; New York City, New York

2-5 minute read

Being in New York City always seems to supply me with an inherent sense of joy, only proven by prior written works citing childhood memories on Grand Street. Very few things can top the unfortunately short but well-loved family visits and trips to Katagiri, but a small tour stint with Hotel Mira has found a way to.  Forming in Vancouver with members Charlier Kerr, Mike Noble, Clark Grieve, and Cole George, Hotel Mira produces waves of what can be best described as indie rock and dance-pop. Nonetheless, it has taken such a strong place in my heart and in my ears since I had heard Circulation for the first time. It was the type of song that could quite literally change your life, and it changed mine and would eventually lead me to work with the amazing group.

New Colossus Festival was a feat within itself from a technical perspective alone, housing a four-day, multi-musician show on both floors of Piano’s. Piano’s is a two-story bar and music venue located in the Lower East side of Manhattan. From a consumer standpoint, I cannot be upset with a $25 ticket and a phenomenal $5.50 bloody mary. As I was there both Saturday for the final day of the festival as well as Sunday for Hotel Mira’s free show, I had the opportunity to see some phenomenal musicians while I had been there that I would not have otherwise been personally exposed to due to my lack of Canadian scene knowledge (this was rectified, do not fret.).

Night one of two of the tour run consisted of six bands on the bottom floor’s entertainment room, with Hotel Mira third in the lineup.

I believe it to be incredibly difficult to curate the perfect setlist, and I am sure that any individual who is a fan of live music can agree that it may be impossible. However, Hotel Mira does a phenomenal job of curating one for new listeners and old fans alike. Songs like Fever Pitch, Speaking off the Record, and Vampire all made their way to the setlist, simply adding to the notion of a phenomenal performance.

If Hotel Mira feels like a band that can change your life no matter in the world you are located, it’s because they are. Regardless of a good cry to Southern Comforting, a beach drive to Jungle, or a moment of yearning to Vampire, the magic that goes into the music is undeniable while the energy at a show is unbelievable. A special thank you to this amazing group of artists who brought us on as a touring photographer
